Who we are
The Coochiemudlo Island Recreation Club is a small volunteer run not for profit community organisation that has been dedicated to supporting a wide range of recreational activities for the island residents for over 20 years.
We run a small but well equipped gym as well as the local tennis courts and lawn bowls lawns and our clubhouse has hosted countless community meetings and events.
Our Op-Shop is the powerhouse of our fundraising work, and helps in paying all of our bills so that we can continue to host community meetings and events.
Recently, we were designated as local evacuation centre and have been working to further improve our facilities and clubhouse to better serve the community and allow for some new and exciting opportunities.
Our Story
The Coochiemudlo Island Recreation Club opened in 2004 with Denise and Laurie Burns being our first two members.
Our Clubhouse was opened on Saturday the 28th of February 2004
The Vice President of the Committee in 2004, Denise, remembers;
“Laurie Burns was asked by John Valentine from the Redland City Council if he could make a kind of “Village Green’ in the area of the local tip. The Council was impressed by the work Laurie did with several of his friends with the ground work in building the Isla of Coochie Golf Course, and as the Council was planning to tidy up the area and to enclose the tip area and provide a better tip facility, they asked Laurie to clean up the area. Laurie and his friends levelled the ground to make an oval with a cricket pitch and a BMX cycle track for the young people. They sought advice on creating two tennis courts and started building the tennis courts, and the Council provided much of the money to complete the tennis courts.
In 1991 I suggested to Mayor Eddie Santaguilana that it would be great if we could build a club house for some indoor activities. He agreed and helped Laurie develop a plan to bring it all together. After much fund raising and community work, the Recreation Club was built and officially opened by Peter Dowling MLA who was our State Member of Parliament. A commemorative plaque was placed on the wall of the club house. Laurie and I decided to name the building “Coochiemudlo Island Recreation Club” and we became the first two members of the Club. After the club house was built we set about recruiting members and forming a Management Committee.”
